there's two gigs coming up in the next while that i'm really looking forward to.

the first is a band from waterford called big paulie kool and the mental institution who stomp around the line of political correctness with their rocked out covers of beatles favourites and punked up hymns. they're playing in the big tree on dorset street on wendesday the 4th february.

and then the following monday [the 9th] the republic of loose play whelans. my flatmate got their ep recently - about the same time as he got the new outcast album and every time he put on their ep, i thought it was outcast. which is kinda strange coz they're not very alike. tho they're not absolutely worlds apart either. for the republic of loose, think soulful blues-rock. there's touches of the rolling stones but also of stevie wonder. i can't wait to see them live.

so if you're around dublin for the gigs, pop in for an earful. and if you had to pick one, i'd go for the mental instution coz they don't play in dublin that often and by my reckoning the republic of loose will be all over the radio in the next few months, so you'll hear enuf of them then.

in an unprecedented new years resolution making mood, aonghus and i gave up alcohol for january. in the meantime, we’ve been to one party and visited the pub once, staying dry on both occasions.

it hasn’t really been the booze i’ve missed, but the meeting people and doing things, both of which, in ireland, revolve completely around the booze. i don’t really have much inclination to go out in town to smokey overcrowded pubs without the enticement of alcohol, so mostly i’ve just stayed in. not drinking really makes one antisocial.

a secondary, more serious consequence of this abstinence is not being able to drink coffee on weekend evenings - without the antidote of beer, the caffeine would keep me awake all night.

right now i have the most delicious garlic breath.

aonghus made felafels for dinner [completely from scratch] and i piled on the garlic yoghurt [which is basically just yoghurt mixed with crushed raw garlic]. there's also garlic in the felafel patties, but it's in the garlic yoghurt that the potency lies.

while it's nice fresh garlic breath now, by tomorrow i'll be smelling like a french metro [a simile i heard years ago and have been waiting all this time to use]. stale garlic breath is not half as pleasant as the fresh version and having eaten it raw and in such quantities, i'll probably have garlic exuding from my pores for at least the next twenty four hours.

woo hoo! i just aced my first exam [it was before christmas but i just got the results today]: 98%!

though, in fairness, it was a html exam, which i really should be pretty good at after about seven years of muddling around with it. in fact i'm kinda dissappointed i didn't get 100%. [was gonna put in <sarcasm> tags around that last statement, but remembered they're not interpreted correctly by all browsers].

new year's resolution:
to go to the dentist [before the end of the year]

after about thirteen years, i reckon a dentist's visit it's long over due. it'll just take me a little time to work up to it.
