so it didn't end up snowing during our week away in the west [i know it's ages ago now, but hey, it's something to talk about]. it rained like crazy for the last couple of days, but it was quite lovely for the start of the week.

and the scenery was absolutely magnificent.

one of the days we took an incredible costal drive from north conemara to westport, skirting killary harbour [ireland's only fjord, or so i'm told].

what i find most appealing about the windswept rugged irish galway-mayo coast is how desolate it is. it's bare of vegetation apart from scrubby heather and bent over trees stripped almost bare by the storms. you can easily find yourself in a spot with not a single house in sight. there were very other few cars on the road the morning of our excursion, which is probably just as well because it was barely wide enough for two cars to pass.

so the scenery was definitely the most memorable part of the trip. but a close second was our seaweed bath experience.

twas great. we each got in a big victorian bath of hot hot sea water into which had been added some heated seaweed, so that it was all gloopy and slimey and the bunches of seaweed felt like they'd been sitting in runny jelly. and you just lie in the bath and relax. i think it's also meant to be good for the skin.

but if you get bored of the bath, there's the option of a steam box. you sit in and close the door so just your head sticks out and there's a lever with which you can turn the steam higher and lower. mad. there was steam everywhere.

it was all quite exhausting. or am i the only one that gets worn out from having a bath?
